A letter of Michael Credo to Devina Dediva about who Filipinos truly are

The open letter Mr. Malcolm Conlan wrote for Devina Dediva in response to her hateful words against the Filipinos has been shared many times by people on facebook. They were glad someone not from the Philippines voiced out his views about Filipinos' attitude towards work. The people whom he said will do everything for the the sake of family, and are always there to contribute to the country's economy.

But another letter who come from the country Miss Dediva regarded as low is starting to be noticed and slowly making waves. With most comments from Filipinos who want "an eye for eye", Mr. Michael Credo's letter is somewhat a far cry to that.

Dear Devina Dediva

Whoever you are, I won't judge you by the way you look or what your work is or how you were raised by your parents or how they couldve missed the chance to hire a Filipino nanny to teach you some good manners. Wherever you come from, I won't take that against you. But let me tell you a few things that you might want to consider about how you see Filipinos.

You were right. There are hundreds of thousands of Filipino maids spread all over the world. It didnt sound strange to me at all when you quipped about them. Filipinos are well known to provide care to families of any race giving their strength and energy to lengths that only a Filipino heart could probably understand. We take care of kids and elderlies like our own with unparalleled skill that people of different races hire us from across oceans to rear their families. In the heart of a Filipino maid, the world is family and family ought to be there when theyre needed. Yes, we also have Filipinos scrubbing toilets not their own, but then again imagine the world without clean toilets.

The Filipino brand of service has been so well known that you missed to point out that millions more work abroad in so many fields. We are number one in the call center industry because of the brand of customer service we give. I you ever get lost in a 5-star hotel wherever it is, a Filipino is right at a counter with a smile handy. You might even find yourself one of these days on a desk and a chair at an office with a Filipino beside you in an equally high chair giving you competition. We are everywhere it is impossible to avoid us. Which is exactly the reason there is no point in trying to bash a Filipino on facebook. Facebook is our living room and Twitter? It's our dining table. It was unfortunate you threw trash on our space. Coming from a country where everyone takes a bath everyday whatever the weather, we explode at the sight of garbage. Our good maids can teach you a thing or two about keeping your garbage in your mouth. They are so much better giving you a lesson about good values too.

The problem about what you said is you made yourself sound so blatantly ignorant. You talk about free speech like you were drunk. You hid under its sheets like a coward when you were just plainly being a racist.

I would take that you are of Indian descent. I have met a lot of Indians whom I look up to. In fact I used to work for one of the biggest companies in India here in the Philippines. And they are so much different from you. Like the hordes of Filipinos abroad, they have found themselves in a different country. And they have returned the respect and hospitality we gave them with fond stories of encounters at a grocery store or how their belongings never get lost in their room when they ask for it to be tidied up. All you need is a day with Filipinos. You'd probably die with kindness.

I find it hard to believe that such rudeness and hate come from someone who is living in a society where the majority of the population is not of your own race. It is easier to understand that someone like you would have understood what it's like to travel across countries to make a living. I know that you are in Singapore because the Filipino maids you were talking about are so good at online research that only the CIA hasn't heard of their extra skill yet.

If you ever have the chance, come and visit the Philippines. Or better yet befriend a Filipino you come across. You'll know what family is like and how there is so much hope in humankind. Nothing could be truer than the words of the lady who won Miss World this year when she said that she will bring kindness everywhere she goes around the world, because really, there is nothing like the Filipino brand of kindness.

And oh, sorry you felt bullied online and was forced to change your name on facebook and how pages keep on popping up in your honor. You see, the sons and daughters of the maids know how to pick a fight. And they come in battalions too. Yep, the maid gets to send money back home so their folks can spend their time talking with the rest of the world on twitter ( by the way, gossip is our national past time. We just love stories!) How could you have missed that?
