Magnitude 7.2 earthquake hits the Visayas Region in the Philippines

Updated: At least 144 people were reported dead when a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck the Philippines.

The earthquake struck the central part of the country on Tuesday morning at 8:12 am, and was centered in Carmen, Bohol. It destroyed buildings, roads and historic structures such as churches.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) released a statement saying 15 people died in Cebu; 4 in Bohol; and one in Siquijor.


Governor Hilario Davide of Cebu told the ABS-CBN that four people died when the roof of the market in Cebu City collapsed. Another person was killed in a nearby market, and a child  who was killed when the stampede broke out as people panicked to leave the building.

Nineteen people were injured in Mandaue City, six in Toledo City, and eight in Pinamungajan, totaling to at least 33 people, said NDRRMC.

The city of Tagbilaran in Bohol felt an intensity of VII. Intensity VI was felt in Inigaran Negros Occidental. Intensity V was felt in La Carlota and Iloilo City. Intensity IV was felt in Masbate, Roxas, San Jose, Culasi, Antique; Guihulngan, Negros Oriental. And intensity III was felt in Davao City.

110 aftershocks followed the quake according to the report, with people as far as Zamboanga and Davao in Mindanao reported to have felt it.
