Monster Truck in Mexico Kills 8, Injured Dozens

Eight people lost their lives and injured 79 when a monster truck shot into a crowd of observers at a Mexican air-show in the Mexican state of Chihuahua.

Francisco Velasquez, the driver who appeared to lose control of the truck, is now in custody since Sunday. The truck leaped over and crushed cars on its way during the "Extreme Airshow" demonstration on Saturday.

The supposed three day show of planes, trucks and other events, was canceled after the accident on its second day in a park on the suburb of Chihuahua.

Witnesses said the driver was incapacitated after hitting his head on the interior of the truck. His helmet also came off before the vehicle hit the crowd who flee for their lives.

"I fell over, and when I turned around I saw the tire very close. It hit me and threw me to the other side," Jesus Manuel Ibarra, 41, said as he was treated for injuries to his arm and hip.

"The driver hit his head and his helmet flew off. The truck came directly at where we were," Daniel Dominguez said.

His 11-year-old sister was in surgery for injuries to her legs, and his mother was treated for minor contusions.

The result of the test conducted to the driver according to the state's governor, revealed he was on alcohol but the governor didn't elaborate the level found or if he violated any law.
