Sultan Jamalul Kiram III, the man behind Sulu's rekindled claim to Sabah, died on Sunday of multiple organ failure at 75.
His daughter, Princess Jacel Kiram-Hasan, posted on Facebook that said, “My Appah Sultan Jamalul Kiram III has returned to our Creator at around 4:00 in the morning October 20, 2013.”
The late Kiram who had been confined at the Philippine Heart Center since Thursday, has been battling kidney problems for too long now.
Prior to his death, “He urged his two brothers to further the aspirations to reclaim Sabah for the Filipino people,” Idjirani said in a phone interview.
Earlier this year, supporters of the late Sultan arrived in Sabah which resulted in a stand-off against the Malaysian forces. It lasted for weeks and claimed casualties from both sides.
