There were 300,000 students across the globe who joined and competed at the 2013 Australian Math Competition (AMC). Among the 24 students who got perfect scores were five Filipino students.
Filipino students showed a stellar performance that impressed Australian officials.
Seventy three Filipino students who participated in the competition recieved medals and certificates in a ceremony held recently at the Manila Grand Opera Hotel by Prof. Mike Clapper, executive director of the Australian Mathematics Trust (AMT); Counsellor Nicholas McCaffrey, head of the Australian Embassy's Political, Economic and Public Affairs; Dr. Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG); Ruby Cristobal, who represented the Science Education Institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-SEI); and Dr. Roger Nuqui, supervisor at the Department of Education-Olongapo City.
“The exceptional performance of the Philippines in this years’ edition of the Australian Mathematics Competition is a demonstration of Filipinos’ great talent and potential in the field of mathematics. It is also a testament to the ongoing hard work and professionalism of the Mathematics Trainers Guild of the Philippines (MTG) and their commitment to nurture this capability,” says Australian Embassy’s Political, Economic and Public Affairs, Counsellor McCaffrey
Professor Mike Clapper of Australian Mathematics Trust (AMT) was just as impressed saying, ”Particularly in the Juniors, they've done extremely well. To get four perfect scores in one year level and five altogether is really impressive. They obviously get very good training,“ referring to Mathematics Trainers Guild-Phlippines (MTGT) headed by Dr. Simon Chua.
“We at MTG are very thankful for the recognition. We will continue our mission to train Filipino students for the AMC and other international math competitions,” said Dr. Chua.
